Hi, I’m Marissa also known as the curlyhairacademic on Instagram. I’m a history student and history blogger focusing on women/gender studies in history. My passion is to give a voice to those without a voice and to share the inspiring women that have come before us. Without knowing our history, we have no future.
What does it mean to be a Notorious Woman?
“Famous or well known, typically for some bad quality or deed”
Do women have a history? How is it different from the history we’ve learned in high school and college textbooks? “Well behaved women seldom make history” We all know this quote and often times cite it as inspiration to do something hard when the odds are stacked against us. One of the most effective ways to maintain control over a group of people is to deny them access to their own histories. Women have long been left out of our high school and college textbooks, their histories left behind and ignored for many years.
Today we are taking our history back.
Women in history have been included in order to maintain the narrative that the historians of old wished to leave behind. Women who stepped outside of the mold were labeled as troublemakers, rule breakers and were either written as an example of what not to do, misrepresented and had their stories changed or were left out of history books completely.
This blog is telling the stories of these women. The women who were described and portrayed in history as notorious. The scandals and those who in some way have been perceived as a villain in their histories.
My commitment to you is to provide an accurate history of these women. To go over their lives through as many primary sources I have access to and relying on trusted and academic secondary sources to formulate my own opinions and analysis of the events of the past. I am a history undergraduate student and will be applying to graduate schools in the next year in order to achieve my PhD in women’s studies in American history. My heart for this blog is to share my love of history, cultivate my writing skills further and build a community of history scholars.
I hope that you will join me on this adventure through history. If there is a subject you would love to learn about feel free to reach out to me on Instagram or through email firstname.lastname@example.org I would love to hear from you.
